Series: Wind Riders

A perfect choice for any early reader, Wind Riders (written by Jen Marlin and illustrated by Izzy Burton and Marta Kissi) is an illustrated chapter book series that centers around themes of wildlife conservation and youth activism.

Max and Sofia are ordinary kids who tackle big environmental issues with their magical sailboat Wind Rider. Wind Rider takes them to countries all over the globe so they can help save animals in danger. In each book, the kids team up with members of the local population to come up with creative solutions to their problems. Book #1 takes Max and Sofia to Hawaii where they work to protect baby turtles from the dangers of light pollution. In Book #2, they travel to the Amazon rainforest to protect macaw habitats from the threat of deforestation. Book #3 is set in a coastal Scottish town where the kids race against time to save harbor seals from the devastating effects of an oil spill. Book #4 transports them to the cliffs of Iceland where they must deal with the plastic pollution that’s harming both puffins and whales. At the end of each book, the author includes extra facts about the country visited, the species saved, and the ways that readers can help address the highlighted environmental issue.

“‘This must be why Wind Rider brought us here. We have to clean up the spill!”

“This wasn’t the biggest whale he’d ever seen, but it looked heavy. Would they be strong enough?”
