Organic Farming(Agricultural practice rooted in ecological stewardship and sustainable land management)
Organic farming is a method of growing food that relies on composting, crop rotation, cover crops, mulching, and beneficial insects to support soil fertility, plant health, water quality, and biodiversity. In the United States, certified organic production follows USDA Organic Program rules that prohibit synthetic fertilizers, most synthetic pesticides, and genetically engineered seeds or ingredients. This restriction is central to certification, but it is debated in climate discussions because some genetically engineered or gene-edited crops may support drought tolerance, pest resistance, yields, or other climate-adaptation goals. Organic farming is therefore a regulated approach to ecological land management, not the only model for sustainable or climate-smart agriculture.
Peer-reviewed scholarship traces the modern organic movement to early twentieth-century debates over soil fertility, composting, and the relationships among soil, crops, livestock, and human health. Agricultural researcher Sir Albert Howard is often identified as a major figure, and these ideas later shaped formal standards such as the USDA Organic Program.
Organic farming supports climate literacy by linking farm practices to greenhouse gas emissions, soil carbon, biodiversity, and water quality. Open-access research finds that organic systems often increase soil carbon and species richness, though yields may be lower or more variable. Composting, cover cropping, crop rotation, and reduced reliance on synthetic pesticides can also help farms respond to drought, flooding, and extreme weather.
Many communities use organic methods, while related land-based traditions may share ecological goals without being certified organic. Small-scale farmers may reduce reliance on purchased synthetic inputs, but organic production can require more labor, recordkeeping, certification costs, and may bring lower yields during transition. Indigenous land stewardship includes long-standing practices that predate modern organic standards and should not be treated as organic certification. Urban farmers may use organic methods to reduce exposure to synthetic pesticides and herbicides, while cooperatives and family farms use certification to meet demand for food grown with fewer synthetic chemicals and greater transparency.
Critiques of organic farming focus on access, oversight, certification, and environmental limits. Certification fees, inspections, recordkeeping, land insecurity, and limited access to premium markets can exclude growers who already use organic or agroecological methods. These barriers raise questions about who benefits, how standards are enforced, and what counts as “organic.” Organic farms can also cause nutrient runoff, pollution, or water contamination if manure, compost, approved pesticides, irrigation, or soil management are poorly handled.
Overall, organic farming can reduce some environmental harm and strengthen soil, ecosystems, and community resilience, but it is not a complete climate solution or a universal definition of sustainability. It is best understood alongside regenerative agriculture, agroecology, and food justice, which also asks who benefits, who bears environmental risks, and how food systems can care for both land and people.
